Food Security
What is it?
Food security refers to ensuring that all residents have reliable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and preferences for an active and healthy life. It’s a crucial part of sustainability, as it ties together environmental, social, and economic aspects.
Who’s working on it in the Tri-Cities?
- Food Access and Security Coalition (FASC) – Our mission is to make nutritious food more accessible to everyone in Benton and Franklin County by working together on practical solutions that strengthen local food systems and meet community needs.
- Farmers Markets – provide local produce and often accept SNAP benefits.
- Tri-Cities Food Bank – Feeding Those in Need since 1975
- Soul Soup Tri-Cities – Give a helping hand to those who need it!
- Mid Columbia Meals on Wheels – Since 1974, Mid-Columbia Meals on Wheels has been meeting the social and nutritional needs of older adults in our community.
- Second Harvest – Second Harvest offers a wide variety of innovative programs designed to nourish our community from all angles, addressing immediate hunger needs, long-term food security, and nutrition education.
- Fields of Grace – Reduce area food waste and increase the availability of fresh food to those in need by gleaning crops from our local farms, residents, and markets then transporting the harvest to local food banks.
