Wood ducks are captivating and beautiful, especially the kaleidoscope of the male’s iridescent green crest and the female’s distinctive white eye patch. These waterfowl are uniquely equipped to nest in tree cavities and navigate tangled tree branches. Wood duck hens will often raise two broods in a year, range in size from 6 to 16 eggs. Within 24 hours of hatching ducklings with leap from their nest in the trees, as high as 50 feet, to join their mother on the ground below.

Learn more about these amazing birds, their habitat, and conservation with Richland Rod and Gun Club member Dale Schielke. Dale has built and maintained wood duck nesting boxes for over 40 years and has received numerous conservation awards.

The construction of a nesting box will also be demonstrated.
