Affordable Housing
What is it?
Affordable housing refers to housing options that cost a reasonable amount of money. It ensures that people of all income levels can access safe living conditions without losing other basic needs like food, healthcare, and transportation.
Affordable housing is crucial for sustainability because it supports economic stability, reduces homelessness, and allows workers to live near their jobs, reducing commutes and lowering carbon emissions. In the Tri-Cities, ensuring access to affordable housing helps maintain a balanced, thriving community that can adapt and grow over time.
Who’s working on it in the Tri-Cities?
- Benton Franklin Community Action Committee – Providing pathways out of poverty. Contains a “Home Base Resource Directory” with many resources.
- Kennewick Housing Authority (KHA) – Their mission is to develop and maintain safe, affordable, quality housing that promotes healthy neighborhoods and inspires communities. They create partnership opportunities that support and encourage program participants to become self-sufficient.
- Housing Authority of the City of Pasco and Franklin County (HACPFC) – The mission of the HACPFC is to provide safe, sanitary and affordable housing and housing assistance to serve the needs of the low-income, very low-income, and extremely low-income population.
