Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose

What is it?

Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose focuses on minimizing waste by preventing it from being created in the first place, whereas Recycling involves processing used materials to create new products.

  • Reduce: Cutting down on waste generation by using fewer resources. For example, avoiding single-use plastics.
  • Reuse: Extending the life of products by using them multiple times. For example, donating clothes, using refillable containers.
  • Repurpose: Finding new uses for old items instead of discarding them. For example, turning glass jars into storage containers.

Recycling, on the other hand, requires breaking down materials and remanufacturing them into new products, which often involves energy and processing. Many materials cannot be recycled, or are not recycled because there is no market for it, and end up in the landfill. Prioritizing Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose is more sustainable because it prevents waste at the source.
