Postcard Party
In 2021, the Washington State legislature passed and Governor Inslee signed the Climate Commitment Act (CCA), the foundation of our state climate policy. The CCA created a market for a limited number of permits to use fossil fuels, and directed the revenue from the sale of the permits to be used to reduce carbon emissions and remove carbon from the atmosphere. The auctions for the permits began last year.
Also last year, sufficient signatures were gathered to put Initiative 2117 on the ballot in November. I-2117 essential repeals the CCA, and goes farther by prohibiting any form of price on carbon.
A coalition of over 100 organizations, including Citizens Climate Lobby, are opposing I-2117. Our role is to write more than 10,000 postcards to people who have expressed environmental values but who seldom vote. Our Tri-Cities chapter is committed to writing 1000 postcards. We’ll hand-write the addresses and a short message on the postcards in postcard writing parties in June – September. The postcards will be mailed in October.
We have scheduled three two-hour postcard parties so far: 5 pm Tuesday June 25, 2:30 pm Sunday July 14 and 5 pm Tuesday August 6. All are in a conference room at Richland Public Library. Please mark a date on your calendar and come by to write postcards and meet some other volunteers. We’ll provide refreshments too!
We wrote 340 postcards at our first party. Let’s see if we can top that number in our second!
