Green Industry

What is it?

Green industry refers to businesses and economic activities that prioritize sustainability by reducing environmental impact, conserving resources, and promoting clean energy. These industries include carbon-free and renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro), energy-efficient manufacturing, sustainable agriculture, recycling, and environmental conservation.

In the Tri-Cities, green industries support economic sustainability by creating jobs in clean energy, waste reduction, and sustainable construction while helping businesses operate more efficiently and responsibly. They drive long-term growth while protecting natural resources for future generations.

Who’s working on it in the Tri-Cities?

  • Energy Northwest: Produces reliable, affordable, environmentally responsible electric power and delivers it to Northwest public power utilities at the cost of production.
  • Built Green Tri-Cities and Walla Walla Program: Part of the Home Builders Association. The goal of the program is to work in partnership to create safer, healthier and more efficient homes, reduce negative impacts of construction and development, and improve and protect the valuable community and natural resources.
  • myTRI 2030 Agriculture Initiative: Agriculture is central to the economy and sustainability of our region. Due to the geological make-up and abundant natural resources of our area, we are able to build on our strong agricultural heritage.
  • Atlas Agro – Atlas Agro is creating a new path to sustainable agriculture with low carbon nitrogen fertilizers. By harnessing green hydrogen and green ammonia, they produce high-quality, cost-effective nitrate fertilizers using only renewable energy, air, and water as raw materials.
