Snow and Ice: How we can and why we should save the world’s frozen water

Snow & Ice

Thursday, January 15, 7:00 pm, Richland Library

Mountaineer and climate scientist Steven Ghan will take you on a visual journey along the crest of the North Cascades, showing evidence of glacier retreat as well as spectacular alpine scenery. He will relate his anecdotal evidence with data from around the world showing retreat of glaciers, reductions in mountain snowpack, loss of Arctic sea ice, and melting of Greenland ice. He will place these recent changes within the context of the repeated advance and retreat of ice over the last 800,000 years, and will provide a physically-consistent explanation for them.

Why should we care about this?  Dr. Ghan will discuss the likely outcome and profound human impacts of the continued depletion of the world’s frozen water, and will offer concrete and effective suggestions on how the global ice melt can be prevented.
